Do this ASAP if you are ever in an auto accident
I hope you never need this.
If you’re ever in an auto accident, what you do in the first 10–15 minutes can make a massive difference in how things turn out.
Here are the steps I tell friends and clients to follow so they don’t get stuck in a “he said / she said” situation:
1️⃣ Make sure everyone is safe first.
Check for injuries. Call 911 if needed. Safety always comes before paperwork.
If you are on a street or at the side of a street, stay away from the road. Stand in a safe place.
2️⃣ Call the police — even if it seems minor.
A police report protects you.
Without one, it can become your word vs. theirs.
In Colorado especially, this matters more than people realize.
3️⃣ Take LOTS of photos.
Don’t just take one picture of the bumper.
Photograph:
• All vehicles involved
• License plates
• The other driver
• Driver’s license
• Insurance card
• The intersection or street signs
• Skid marks
• Weather conditions
• Wide-angle shots of the scene
You cannot take too many pictures. Take videos, too.
4️⃣ Get witness information.
If anyone saw what happened:
Get:
• Name
• Phone number
Witnesses leave quickly. Once they’re gone, you probably won’t find them again.
Independent witnesses can completely change a claim outcome.
5️⃣ Do NOT admit fault.
Even saying “I’m sorry” can be interpreted as admitting fault.
Stick to facts. Let the investigation determine responsibility.
6️⃣ Call your insurance agent before giving recorded statements (if possible).
Even if we’re not your current agent, I’m always happy to give guidance.
Sometimes the other carrier will call quickly and ask for a recorded statement.
It’s okay to pause and get advice first.
7️⃣ Seek medical attention if needed — even later.
Some injuries (especially neck/back) don’t show up immediately.
Documentation matters.
Accidents are stressful. But being prepared can protect you financially and legally.
If you’d like, I can send you a simple “Accident Checklist” you can keep in your glove box.
Stay safe out there.
